MainStream Media has become more popular and less censored as the years go on. MainStream Media is also influenced by political views. For our generation all we have known is a world of MainStream Media and Social Media to rely on for our news. Certain sources and outlets lean left and some lean right. When people only focus on outlets that lean towards one side and do not get any information from the other side they may be exposing themselves to fake news. Fake news is a newly widely accepted term that is used to describe when people wholeheartedly believe false information because it fits their narrative. This idea of fake news and disinformation is a very large threat to the public that the Department of Homeland security created a board with the sole goal of preventing the spread of disinformation. In the article “Biden puts disinfo ‘Mary Poppins’ on ice, scraps Orwellian DHS board” by Theo Wayt, Mark Lungariello and Samuel Chamberlain, from a previous week, we learned that this board by DHS was seen by the American people as a way to control them and censor what they say on the internet. Through the twitter files that Elon Musk revealed to the public, it was made clear that the FBI and other organizations within the government have control over what gets posted on social media and even stream media. The twitter files revealed that FBI agents were given the power by employees and board members of twitter to flag accounts that they want banned because they do not agree with what they are posting and twitter would grant their request promptly. This has been a debate of whether or not it violates the First Amendment of free speech.
Robert Kennedy Jr. touched on the leaking of the twitter files in his interview by Dr. Mercola. Although, the most shocking point that Robert Kennedy Jr. made was that the money the United States sends to Ukraine is not going directly to Ukraine, but instead bounces back to the Pentagon. The money that the government is reporting to the American people that they are sending to help Ukraine is in fact not going to help Ukraine, but as Robert Kennedy Jr. puts it, it is going to the pockets of the retirement funds of Pentagon employees. The accusation here is that the government is not giving the full truth to the American people. The Ukraine war is a very sad and devastating event that is happening overseas. So, to hear that the United States government reports helping them, but in reality is not, is heartbreaking and should be for many Americans.
As the upcoming generation it is important for us to be able to combat misinformation and fake news. It is important for us to look at many sources and all of the different sides and perspectives before forming a narrative and opinion to believe. I do not believe the government will ever provide us with the whole truth so it is our responsibility to find all the information available to us and form informed opinions. Therefore we are able to protect not only ourselves but our community from falsified information.
