Social media is a platform that can be used in many different ways. The specific platform of Twitter was once used as a platform for users to say whatever they wanted and be able to reach many people from all over the world. From the outside perspective that is what it is made out to seem like, but in reality, there is a lot of censorship that happens behind the scenes. User can post whatever they want to as long as the FBI and US government agrees with it. Twitter has a large political presence and is a platform many users use to express their political opinions. In the instance of Paul Sperry, this was not the case according to the article “Mapping Out All The Key Revelations From The ‘Twitter Files’ So Far…” by Tyler Durden. Adam Schiff, head of the powerful House Intelligence Committee, wrote to Twitter to have Sperry’s account banned because he claimed that an article Sperry wrote claiming that a whistleblower was a CIA analyst was harassment. Sperry’s account was then removed. Tyler continues to report that there are many instances of this occurring. Twitter received many claims from the FBI asking them to censor certain users and ban certain accounts. If Twitter fails to comply with their demands, members of the bureau will question Twitter executives and make it clear that they have upset them. The FBI controls Twitter and the specific people that can have accounts and what users can and can not say. Twitter is a platform that is intended to allow users to have freedom of speech and express what they learn and their opinions, but that is not the case if the US government is controlling it.
Throughout this course, we are being taught to be skeptical of what we see on the internet and the narratives that the media is trying to push toward us. Not everything that the media is telling us is accurate and true, it is purely what they want us, as the public, to believe. If the FBI is censoring Twitter what else are they capable of censoring?
